Ten IT Concepts That Non-IT People Don't Get

Since I “work with computers” I tend to get asked to do fair amount of unofficial technical support for family and neighbours. I’ve noticed that the same confusions about IT crop up again and again. Here’s my top ten.
(Note that due to my background this is going to be Windows-centric. Please don’t take this to mean that I think Windows PCs are unfriendly – it’s just I don’t know enough about other systems to be able to comment. I also don’t want to come across as elitist – if non-IT people don’t understand something, that’s not because they’re dumb – it’s because we haven’t made computer systems obvious enough.)
Click or Double-Click1. When to Click and When to Double-Click
This one is a continual source of annoyance to IT people, and especially to those in support. It seems obvious to us which should be used when, but before you get mad with the user you’re helping, consider this: can you make rules for when to click and when to double-click? Why do you double-click an icon to perform the action, but only single-click a button? What if Windows is set to “single click to open an item”?
Add into the mix the close cousin right-clicking, together with triple-clicks in text editors, double-single-clicks to rename, and of course modified clicks (holding down control or shift), and I think confusion is the correct response.
Folder2. Hierarchical Folders
Hierarchical folders are a great idea – don’t get me wrong – but they’re a good example of a neat metaphor overextended and hence confused. Most people are familiar with cardboard folders that can store bits of paper – and equally most people are happy to store their files in folders on their PC. Where it all goes wrong is with folders within folders, as this very rarely happens in the real world. Many users are simply unaware that they can create additional folders inside “My Documents” – hence the usual tendency to find hundreds or even thousands of files, all at the same folder level.
Making the problem even worse is the fact that “Save As” and “Open” dialogs often look nothing like the standard file explorer. This makes it more difficult to mentally link the save operation with the save location. This leads to the common problem of a user “losing” all their files – when in fact the “open” dialog has for some reason defaulted to another directory, and hence shows a different list of files to those the user was expecting.
(And don’t even get me started on the fact that folders like “My Documents” appear in TWO locations in the folder tree – the physical one that users can’t find or recognise, and the virtual one which isn’t supported by all applications).
Recycle3. Using Add/Remove Programs
I need to clarify here. When a user wants to remove a program they chose to install, they head over to Add/Remove Programs – no problems. I’ve found however that when it’s software they didn’t install (or didn’t intentionally install) – there’s a problem. Messages that pop-up on start-up, unwanted system tray announcements, even auto-starting applications – these are all a source of annoyance, and often there’s no obvious way to associate the offender with the appropriate entry in Add/Remove Programs. Often trialware pops up nag screens at startup, giving the user the option to purchase it – but without an option to uninstall.
Even worse is the case where a user wants to keep the application, just not have it launch at startup. There are many different ways an application can hook into the startup sequence, and most of them are inaccessible unless you’re comfortable using something like msconfig (which, let’s face it, non-IT people aren’t).
Sony Vaio4. Installing Bundled Software Hurts
IT people know that bundled software (aka “crapware”) isn’t included for our benefit – it’s generally a way hardware manufactures or system builders lower costs by basically pushing unwanted adverts for unwanted products onto your machine, in the hope that you won’t be able to uninstall them, and will finally buy them (see item #3 above).
Unfortunately a standard user assumes that if a hardware item comes with a disk, that disk is there for a good reason – and so installs the lot. Sometimes this is just an annoyance, but sometimes it’s more sinister – bundled software often stops the PC functioning correctly. The worst offenders seem to be the software that comes with wireless network adapters. For some reason they all want to turn off Window’s standard wireless zero-configuration system, and install their own. Sadly, their own offerings often don’t work (especially if they were written pre-XP) and the user is left with a completely non-functioning wireless system. Had the user simply plugged in the hardware and let Windows do the rest, it probably would have worked. The instructions said to install the software – and possibly stung by all the geeks who kept telling them to “RTFM” – they did so.
Firefox5. That There Is A Choice Of Software
Odds are that you’re reading this on Firefox – or if not, as a reader of a coding blog, you at least know the name of the browser you’re using. This almost certainly isn’t the case for the majority of PC users – they don’t use a browser, they use the internet (or if not the internet, then they use msn, facebook, google, or whatever). Most people simply use the browser as a means to an end. The same goes for music players, email clients (generally dictated by their ISP), and anti-virus (generally the one with the biggest display in the local PC shop).
Unfortunately this means that when things go wrong, or go expensive, or go ad-ridden, these users aren’t even aware they can change. Adverts on the web are annoying, but if you have no idea you can change your browser and install an ad-blocker, you have no choice but to suffer them. This also means that poor software can survive in the marketplace – since for correctly positioned, pushed, and marketed software, there ceases to even be a marketplace.
Windows Update6. What Updates Do
While writing this article – the first two weeks of September – my laptop has installed updates on the 1st, 4th, 9th, 11th and 14th of the month. Since this is a rather slow laptop, that means that if I choose to install them, I have to put up with bad performance, and if I don’t, I have to put up with repeated nagging. Even when I do install them, I know that in another couple of days they’ll be back.
I know updates are necessary – but do we need them every three days? Do they need to be quite so slow? And do they have to nag when I’m trying to use my PC – couldn’t they wait a while to see if the screensaver kicks in, as that’s likely to be a better time than now, now, now.
Money7. Software Licensing
We need to put aside a discussion of whether software should be free or not for this one, and let’s just assume that people are happy paying for software for now.
The problem is that buying software isn’t really like buying other goods – what you buy isn’t the box, or the media, but a license. With normal goods, once you’ve purchased it, you keep hold it, and if it turns out to be an illegal purchase, someone (eg the police) have to come and physically remove it. With software, if the vendor decides it’s not a valid purchase, then the software magically stops working, with no easy recourse for the customer.
I’ve come across many cases of people who thought they were legitimately purchasing software, but in fact weren’t – either purchasing from someone who was knowingly selling illegal software, or purchasing from someone who believed they had the right to sell, but didn’t. Either way, the honest software purchasers had no immediate way of knowing the software they were buying wasn’t legit.
To be fair, most software vendors are taking steps to improve this – although the cynic in me says this is mainly to protect revenue streams, not customers.
RAM8. What Memory (RAM) Is For
I think most computer users have a pretty good idea what disk storage is for – that’s where their files are stored. What I think users have a bigger problem with is volatile memory. It’s very difficult to describe to a non-techie what RAM actually does – just saying “it’s what running programs use” doesn’t give a full description by any means.
Making the problem worse is that fact that most consumer PCs are sold with the bare minimum of RAM. Users can easily see that they have a good amount of disk storage free, but it’s more difficult to get a feeling for whether they have enough RAM. Most users simply don’t realise that computers don’t have to be slow, and don’t have to spend all their time swapping virtual memory.
Network9. How To Use Networking
As computers become cheaper, many households now have more than one. As that happens, this question is asked of me more and more often: “I’ve saved my files on the office computer; how can I get them on the laptop?”. The first couple of times, I set up a simple home network and created shortcuts to shared folders on each desktop. Unfortunately, this didn’t really cut it.
I think the main problem is that home networking fundamentally doesn’t fit in with most people’s work patterns – if they’re working on the laptop (say), why would the office computer be switched on? Having to leave both computers on just doesn’t fit. From the user’s point of view, sometimes the files are there (when the other computer is on), and sometimes they’re not.
I’ve found that solutions like Dropbox are much more palatable – while all the home computers might not be switched on, the internet connection almost always is. The networking in this case is transparent – the user doesn’t have to do a thing – and the files are magically up-to-date on all their computers.
Computer10. The Display Is Not The Computer
For a long time, the sheer size of CRT monitors led many users to assume the monitor was the computer, and if they thought about the box below the desk at all, they thought it was “the hard-drive”. Now that monitors are much slimmer, people understand that the monitor is just a display mechanism, and the computer actually is under the desk.
Where it all goes a little confusing is when the computer in question isn’t near the display in front of the user – remote desktop, remote assistance, and the like. Even more flummoxing seems to be the notion of servers in general – for some reason a computer without a display unit doesn’t seem to be easily understandable. Despite the familiarity of the web, the idea that accessing a website involves a computer, often running a familar operating system, somewhere remote, seems a difficult one.
Any More?
Have I missed any other concepts that are repeatedly misunderstood? Any common problems you have to deal with? Let me know!

6 basic steps to keep a Computer running fast

t1
305x600 6 basic steps to keep a Computer running fast
Control Panel in start menu

When you first buy a new computer, it runs very smooth and fast. But later on we notice that it has become slow and freezes.

Why does it actually happen?

It’s because of the temporary files and garbage registry values added to the system through various ways like installing new software, adding and deleting files from hard disk, downloading items from internet.
So here, I am sharing 6 basic steps to get your PC running faster and smoother.

#1. Remove unwanted software

  • Go to control panel.
  • Then add/remove programs.
  • Now uninstall the software which you don’t need.

2. Update Antivirus Software

  • Update the antivirus software you have on your PC regularly.
  • Then perform a full system scan so as to remove all the malware from your system.

3. Check when you need to use Disk Fragmenter

  • Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter.
  • Analyse each of the partitions (by right-clicking on each of the drives and selecting analyse).
  • Defragment the ones which requires defragmentation as shown by the message.
Disk Defragmenter
Defragementation necessary

4. Delete Temporary files

  • Go to start->run.
Then enter “%temp%” (without quotes) and hit enter.
A windows comes up. Select and delete all the files in it. (I had around 200 files in it).

#5. Delete Prefetch files

Then enter “prefetch” (without quotes) and hit enter.
Now select all files and delete them.(I deleted all my 60 files).

#6. Deal with Registry Errors

CCLEANER
Then click on “scan for issues”. Wait till the scanning is complete.
  • A list of many registry errors will come up.
  • Select all the issues. Now click on “fix selected issues”.
    and then confirm it.
So now our registry garbage is also cleaned.
Finally, restart your PC and notice the changes in terms of speed yourself.
I noticed a tremendous change following these steps. Now, my PC is 10 times much faster than before.

How To Boot Xp Faster

First of all, this tweak only apply to those who only have one HDD on their primary IDE channel (nothing else on device 0 or 1) and a CD-ROM and/or DVD-ROM on the secondary IDE channel. Each time you boot Windows XP, there’s an updated file called NTOSBOOT-*.pf who appears in your prefetch directory (%SystemRoot%Prefetch) and there’s no need to erease any other files as the new prefetch option in XP really improves loading time of installed programs. We only want WindowsXP to boot faster and not decrease its performance. Thanks to Rod Cahoon (for the prefetch automation process…with a minor change of mine) and Zeb for the IDE Channel tweak as those two tricks, coupled together with a little modification, result in an EXTREMELY fast bootup:

1. Open notepad.exe, type "del c:windowsprefetch tosboot-*.* /q" (without the quotes) & save as "ntosboot.bat" in c:

2. From the Start menu, select "Run…" & type "gpedit.msc".

3. Double click "Windows Settings" under "Computer Configuration" and double click again on "Shutdown" in the right window.

4. In the new window, click "add", "Browse", locate your "ntosboot.bat" file & click "Open".

5. Click "OK", "Apply" & "OK" once again to exit.

6. From the Start menu, select "Run…" & type "devmgmt.msc".

7. Double click on "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers"

8. Right click on "Primary IDE Channel" and select "Properties".

9. Select the "Advanced Settings" tab then on the device 0 or 1 that doesn’t have ’device type’ greyed out select ’none’ instead of ’autodetect’ & click "OK".

10. Right click on "Secondary IDE channel", select "Properties" and repeat step 9.

11. Reboot your computer.

WindowsXP should now boot REALLY faster.

How to do a high Quality DivX rip

First and Foremost Download the following files:
---->Besweet
---->Besweet GUI
---->DivX
---->Nandub 1.0RC2

Then get this:
http://www.dvd-digest.tv/downloads/files/virtualdub/vdub_pack-145.exe
alternatively, get any version of virtualdub that includes mp3 support.

these are all the required tools, there are ways with fewer items, but they produce very inferior outputs. Besides, after you get used to it, the whole process is really easy.

Okay, first and foremost, pull out Nandub. This is the step that takes the longest, as well as where you will make most of your decisions. I am going to assume that you are making a 1 cd rip. If you do what is in this faq, there won't be much reason to do anything else. Twisted Evil

First of all, run Nandub . It will pop up a dialogue box, and want to know if you are making a new project or resuming an old. New, of course. Give it a name and tell fairuse where you want it to store its data. Fairuse is about to rip the entire movie to your harddrive(nice if you want to go rent a movie and return it the next day).

Then it will ask for your DVD drive with a dvd in it. give it. Then, select which video stream you want. This is usually pretty obvious as the movie stream is the one that is an hour or so long. If there are two of these, check out the other tags. which languages and so on. worst case senario is that you have to trial and error. but that is rare. choose the long stream and hit next.

This is where Nandub rips everything to your hard drive. depending on the speed of various components in your computer, and the length of the movie, this could take a while. let it finish. and then move on.

Once all that is done, the really important screen pops up. this is where you set resolutions and video length. first, cut off the ending credits with the slider, but DO NOT mess with the beginning, as the sound and video frames need to start at the same point for sync. Then hit auto set for the cropping region, this is usually just fine. Then decide whether or not you want subtitles, which would be the subpicture stream. When you're done, hit next.

Set the field mode to IVTC. This will give you better quality for size, as it runs at 24 frames instead of 30, due to the nature of divx, there won't be any noticeable difference in quality, but 6 less frames to deal with each second(and to store data for) really add up. Besides this is the correct mode for all movies anyway. NEXT.

This is where you set FINAL file size, including audio, for 1 cd rip, set to 690, for 2, set to double that. Then follow the directions they give you and choose a final resolution that has between a 120:1 and 150:1 (if possible, sometimes the movie is compression ratio. NEXT!

This screen is where you determine quality. The autoadd button is usefull, and will give you decent quality, with 4 encodings. What this does is encode the movie 4 times, and then mix the frames to creat the final encoding, with the most efficient possible encoding for each frame. which is how we get bad ass quality for a single cd. I usually go for 8 encodings, as on my athlon 1600+ this rarely takes more than 8 hours to do, so I just go to sleep, wake up, and its done.

Then add the audio encoding that you want.

Hit next.
And let the bastard fly. Depending on what you set, and your computer, this could take from a few hours to a few days. CPU's of 1.2Ghz+ are nice right about here. You can do stuff while this is going on, but it makes things take much longer.

In the end you will have a bunch of encodings in the folder you specified at the beginning, the 4+ you chose and the final. You will also have an AC3 stream. Take the final AVI and toss it someplace to await the rest of the audio work you have to do, and you can erase the other encodings, freeing up a few gigs in the process of space.

NEXT: AUDIO

Ok, this is where Besweet comes in.

Extract BeSweet and the GUI into the same folder. Now Run the GUI.

At the top there are three fields. One for BeSweet which you should point at the besweet.exe that you should have unzipped to the same directory you are running the Gui from, A field for the AC3 stream, which is in the folder where you sent the encoded video from Fairuse, and an output mp3. The output mp3 has to be an existing file, so make a text file, rename it (yourmovie).mp3 and just say yeah, its cool to change the extension and make things weird. besweet will overwrite it so don't worry. point the third field at that file. The default values for stuff should be fine. but to make sure go to Azid 1(on the left) and select stereo, and then go to Lame 2 and select constant bit rate, and 128(assuming that is what you want). then click on besweet again, and finally, click on AC3 to MP3.

Let the bastard fly.

Now. When its done you should have an mp3 that is the entire soundtrack for the movie. This is where virtualdub comes in. run the virtualdub mp3 version. go to File:open video file and select the final encoding that you had from way back. Then go to audio and select mp3 audio. it will ask you for the file, give it the mp3. Go to audio again and make sure direct stream copy is selected. Then go to video and make sure that direct stream copy is also selected. Finally go to file again and SAVE AVI. give it a file name and let the bastard fly. This final file is your movie. Beautiful and glorious. Congratulations, its a DivX rip. Aren't you proud. burn to cd, and give copies to all your friends.

Note: These is a RIP

How To Block A Web Site On My Computer (In All Web Browsers)

Below are the steps to do the task..

step 1: Click Start->All Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt.

step 2:
Click Command Prompt This will open a DOS command window.

step 3
: Type: notepad C:/Windows/System32/drivers/etc/hosts

step 4:
Locate the line 127.0.0.1 localhost

step 5:
To block the website orkut.com for example, just add this text under 127.0.0.1 localhost:

127.0.0.1 orkut.com
127.0.0.1 www.orkut.com

You can add as many sites any site, However you will need to prefix it with "127.0.0.1".

step 6: Save the file

Orkut will now be blocked in all web browser. This is an advanced but easy method on how to block a website.

SPEED UP ACROBAT READER (ALMOST LIKE NOTEPAD)

Adobe Acrobat reader always consumes more memory when it starts. The reason behind is, it loads all the plugins, even the plugins that you do not use. This trick is to remove all the plugins from the plugins directory to elsewhere. Hence, whenever you open Acrobat reader it directly opens the files without loading any plugins and the speed is just like Notepad.

1. Go to the installation folder of acrobat reader
(C:\program files\adobe\acrobat\reader\.. whatever)

2. Move all the files and folders from the "plugins" directory to the "Optional" directory. (I repeat.. cut and paste the files NOT copy & paste).

Also make sure that acrobat reader is not open else it will lock the files and not allow you to move the files).

Now your acrobat reader will load very fast and almost as good as notepad.

Top 20 Tips To Keep Your System Faster

Follow these tips and you will definitely have a much faster and more reliable PC!

 1. Wallpapers: They slow your whole system down, so if you're willing to compromise, have a basic plain one instead!

2. Drivers: Update your hardware drivers as frequently as possible.  New drivers tend to increase system speed especially in the case of graphics cards, their drivers are updated by the manufacturer very frequently!

3. Minimizing: If you want to use several programs at the same time then minimize those you are not using.  This helps reduce the overload on RAM.

4. Boot Faster: The 'starting Windows 98/XP' message on startup can delay your booting for a couple of seconds.  To get rid of this message go to c:\ and find the file Msdos.sys.  Remove the Read-Only option.  Next, open it in Notepad or any other text editor.  Finally, go to the text 'Options' within the file and make the following changes: Add BootDelay=0.  To make your booting even faster, set add Logo=0 to remove the Windows logo at startup.

5. Restart only Windows: When restarting your PC, hold down Shift to only restart Windows rather than the whole system which will only take a fraction of the time.

6. Turn Off Animations:  Go to Display Settings from the Control Panel and switch to the Effects Tab. Now turn off Show Windows Content While Dragging and Smooth Edges on Screen Fonts.  This tip is also helpful with Windows XP because of the various fade/scroll effects.

7. Faster Start-Menu Access: Go to the Start menu and select Run.  Now type Regedit and hit Enter.  The Registry Editor will appear on the screen.  Now, open the folder HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop.  You should see a MenuShowDelay value.  If you don't then do the following: right click on a blank space in the right pane and select New\String.  Change the name in the new value to MenuShowDelay.  Now that we have the MenuShowDelay value, double click on it and enter 0 in the value data field.  This sets the start menu delay to 0 milliseconds.

8. Resolutions: If you are willing to do anything for faster performance from your PC, then try lowering your display resolution.  The lower it is, the faster your PC.

9. Turn off Active Desktop:  Go to your Display Properties and switch to the Web tab.  Uncheck View My Active Desktop As a Web Page.  Since the Active Desktop option under Windows 98 uses a lot of system resources, this option can have a dramatic effect on the speed of the whole system.

10. Defragment Often:  Windows 98's Defrag tool uses Application Acceleration from Intel which means that when you defragment your drive, data is physically arranged on the drive so that applications will load faster.

11. Take your PC to Bed:  Using the Advanced Power Management feature under Windows 98 gives you the option to use the sleep command.  That way, you can send your PC to sleep instead of shutting it down and then restarting it.  It's as simple as pressing a button and then pressing the same button to wake it up.  You can tell Windows after how many minutes/hours of inactivity to automatically sleep the machine in the Advanced Power Management section of the Control Panel.

12. Faster Internet Access: If you use the internet for reference and the sites you visit are rarely  updated then try the following.  In IE (the same can be done in Netscape) go to Tools, Internet Options.  Next, click on Settings... in the Temporary Internet Files  section.  Finally, select Never for the first option and double the amount of storage space to use, click OK!

13. Benchmarking: Benchmarking can be very useful when run frequently.  It can tell you how your PC's components are performing and then compare them to other machines like yours.  For example, when you overclock your PC, you want to know how much more speed you have and whether it is stable.  All this and more can be discovered using benchmarking.  An excellent piece of software for doing this job is SiSoft Sandra which can be found in the Downloads File Archive!

14. Refresh the Taskbar without restarting: If you in some way change the taskbar, either in Regedit or elsewhere, you can refresh the task bar without restarting.  Hold down Ctrl Alt Del, and double click on Explorer.  Say Yes to close Explorer, but no to closing Windows.  This will refresh the Taskbar and system tray.

15. Quick CD Eject: Instead of pushing the button on your drive, right-click your CD drive letter in My Computer and click on Eject.  This will also remove any icons that have become associated with the CD drive.

16. Start Up Programs:  Windows can be slowed down when programs run on start up.  To eliminate this, check your Start up folder.  You can access it from the start menu: Start, Programs, Start Up.  Another way to eliminate programs from loading even before Windows actually starts is by doing the following: Click on Start, then Run.  Type msconfig.  It will take quite a long time for this program to load, but when you finally see it on your screen, explore the different tabs.  They all have to do with how quickly your PC boots, so select what you want, and uncheck what you don't want!

17. Fonts: When Windows starts, it loads every single font in the Fonts folder.  Therefore, the more fonts you have, the slower the booting process.  To get rid of unwanted fonts, simply go to the Fonts folder under c:\windows and remove whatever you don't want.  Fonts that have a red letter 'A' as their icon are system fonts, so don't delete them.

18. Stretching Wallpapers:  Don't "stretch" your wallpaper in Windows 98 since it actually slows Windows down when you drag icons around on the desktop.

19. RAM Matters: If you have less than 32MB then you should seriously think of upgrading it to at least 64MB.  Windows runs much more smoothly with 64MB or higher and tends to use less hard disk space for virtual memory.

20. Partitioning: A very nice little thing you can do to boost system performance.  By partitioning your hard drive, splitting one physical drive into several logical ones, you can gain several advantages.  1. If you get a virus or you accidentally format a drive, not all will be lost.  2. By placing the swap file (Win386.swp) on a separate drive, The swap file will be less fragmented and thus, faster. 3. Place Windows on a separate drive and whenever you need to reinstall it, you rest assured that your data is safe on a separate drive.  Partitioning can be done using a few programs such as FDisk which comes with DOS.  However, FDisk formats everything on the hard disk before partitioning. Alternatively, you can use Partition Magic from Power Quest to partition your hard disk without losing your data.

Decreasing Boot Time

Microsoft has made available a program to analyze and decrease the time it takes to boot to WindowsXP
The program is called BootVis

Uncompress the file.
Run BOOTVIS.EXE
For a starting point, run Trace / Next Boot + Driver Delays
This will reboot your computer and provide a benchmark
After the reboot, BootVis will take a minute or two to show graphs of your system startup.
Note how much time it takes for your system to load (click on the red vertical line)
Then run Trace / Optimize System
Re-Run the Next Boot + Drive Delays
Note how much the time has decreased
Mine went from approximately 33 to 25 seconds.

 Increasing Graphics Performance

By default, WindowsXP turns on a lot of shadows, fades, slides etc to menu items.
Most simply slow down their display.

To turn these off selectively:

Right click on the My Computer icon
Select Properties
Click on the Advanced tab
Under Performance, click on the Settings button
To turn them all of, select Adjust for best performance
My preference is to leave them all off except for Show shadows under mouse pointer and Show window contents while dragging

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Increasing System Performance

If you have 512 megs or more of memory, you can increase system performance
by having the core system kept in memory.

Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerMemory ManagementDisablePagingExecutive
Set the value to be 1
Reboot the computer

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Increasing File System Caching

To increase the amount of memory Windows will locked for I/O operations:

Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerMemory Management
Edit the key IoPageLockLimit

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Resolving Inability to Add or Remove Programs

If a particular user cannot add or remove programs, there might be a simple registry edit neeed.

Go to HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesUninstall
Change the DWORD NoAddRemovePrograms to 0 disable it

4096 - 32megs of memory or less
8192 - 32+ megs of memory
16384 - 64+ megs of memory
32768 - 128+ megs of memory

Keeping Your Computer Cleaner + Faster:)

If you want your computer to load faster on start-ups I really recommend you to clean your desktop. If you have many icons and stuff on your desktops it takes much longer to load than if you only have a few things.
So my tip to you is to clean off nearly every icon. It doesn't take much longer to go to the start menu and find the program you want to use.
As well as if you have folder and files on your desktop. Put them somewhere else.

%temp% ........

The %temp% is not hard at all to clean and in some cases it can make your computer faster.
Here is how you clean it:
Go to Start > Run and then you type %temp% and hit the enter button.
A new window will pop-up, in that window delete everything and then close it.
If you can't delete everything just leave it then.

Disk Defrag .....

If you want your harddrives to go faster then I recommend you to disk defrag. Windows already have a disk defrager but I recommend you to use Auslogics Disk Defrager.
You can download it from here.
http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/download

How to Force Shutdown or Restart with commands

Your Windows Operating System does come with different ways to turn it off or restart. Whether you shutdown, restart or log off, the file that is responsible for this is shutdown.exe in the system32 directory of your Windows installation. We will now learn to play with shutdown.exe giving it different parameters ;) To do this, we’ll be keying in shutdown.exe in the RUN command window (available from Start >> Run) along with its parameter(s).

Shutdown.exe

Casual Shutdown: When you run shutdown.exe with the parameter -s, your system will turn off normally, just as it would shutdown when clicked from the Start menu. For this, you’ll run it as shutdown -s.
Force Shutdown: To forcefully shut down your PC, you’ll run shutdown.exe with the parameter -s -f, i.e shutdown -f. This will forcefully terminate all of your running processes and initiates the shutting process. This saves your shutting time when you are in a hurry and you want to turn off your PC safely.
Timed Force Shutdown: Lets say you want to forcefully turn off your PC after 60 seconds, here is when the parameter -t comes to the rescue. When you run shutdown.exe with the parameters -s -f -t xx (where xx is the time in seconds), your PC will forcefully shutdown after the specified time. For instance, to turn off after 30 seconds, you will enter the parameters as -f -t 30 and for 60 seconds, -f -t 60. shutdown -f -t xx
Restart : If you are familiar with shutdown, it’s not much of a deal for restart. To restart, you’ll just replace -s with -r. Confused? For Casual Restart, the command is shutdown -r, and for Force Restart, it is shutdown -r -f, and for Timed Force Restart, it is shutdown -r -f -t xx. Simple, right?
Log Off: When you run shutdown.exe without any parameter, it stands for log off, meaning, your PC will log off. You can also use -l as a parameter to log off. shutdown or shutdown -l
A Quick Recap:
shutdown.exe / shutdown the associated process. Logs off when used without a parameter
-s shutdown
-r restart
-l Log off
-f force
-t xx timed. xx for seconds

Downloading Megaupload Files As Premium User Bypassing Image Code And Timer

File-sharing service Megaupload forces free-downloader's to enter image-verification code and wait for 45 seconds to download the file, we had shared many tips, tricks and tools to bypass this limitation but all of them are obsolete now.

Today I am going to share a wonderful, fast and simple way to bypass megaupload limitation allowing you to download files as premium users even with your download manager.
To get the direct download link all you need to do is to add mgr_dl.php before the question mark in download link as shown below.
Example:
Normal Link - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=GMG4K8TI
Direct Download Link - http://www.megaupload.com/mgr_dl.php?d=GMG4K8TI
To make things simple I have created an exclusive bookmarklet for our blog readers - simply click on the link/bookmarklet below and drag and drop to your bookmarks toolbar, while on the megaupload file download page click the bookmarklet and your download will start automatically.
Bookmarklet -> Megaupload Downloader
Now, before you get too excited I would like to clarify that this is no hack or backdoor to get direct megaupload download links but a legitimate method to get limited direct-download links provided by Megaupload for free users, usually Megaupload provides 1-3 free direct links per IP every 24 hour; to check your current remaining free direct-download link credits check http://www.megaupload.com/mgr_bdr.php page in your web-browser.

360 Desktop View[4.36mb]

360 Desktop is a virtual desktop application that creates a "panoramic workspace" extending across multiple screens. It behaves as a scrollable desktop where you could travel from one side and into the other. It also introduces the ability to embed widgets on the new desktop like clip content off the web such as RSS feeds and videos.
Features:
  • Scrolling is mostly smooth and the navigation works very well.
  • Icons can be placed anywhere on the new desktop, however if you prefer you have the option of disabling panning for icons such that they remain in place even as the desktop scrolls.
  • Most of application and folder windows can be placed anywhere on the new desktop.
